Our dream is sustainability
Solar panels power various aspects of the Cope Environmental Center property. On the picture to the left, the sun's rays are converted into electricity, which in turn powers the pump in our fish pond. Solar power is also used in our public restroom, a Clivus Multrum composting toilet, which protects soil and water quality in a closed-loop system.

In honor of Gertrude "Lucky" Ward, a sustainable living champion who bequeathed her property to CEC in 1997, CEC is turning Lucky's house into a Sustainable Living Demonstration Home. Showcased in the house are demonstrations such as an on-demand water heater, a branched drain greywater system, and of course, Wayne County's first hybrid alternative energy system!

SLDH Welcomes New Residents
CEC would like to officially welcome Keith and Sarah Morey to the SLDH. The Moreys took up occupancy in April and are very excited about becoming a part of this project. In our continuing efforts to create an educational and demonstrative tool to promote sustainable and environmentally sound methods of living, Keith and Sarah will play a major role in providing valuable input to CEC and visitors in regards to living sustainably. The “real time” utility consumption data and first hand experiences from the Moreys will enable CEC to offer very specific solutions for affordable energy-efficient and environmentally friendly solutions for your homes.
