Cope Environmental Center harvests the wind Thought there was
no wind in Indiana?
Check out the
Indiana wind map
In February of 2005 CEC raised the first wind turbine in east-central Indiana and began harvesting the wind. The goal was to educate the public about the benefits of wind energy and to diversify our own sources of alternative energy. Promoting and educating the public about alternative energy is an important part of Cope Environmental Center’s mission. While Cope Environmental Center already utilized other forms of alternative energy such as solar power in the form of photovoltaic panels, which convert the energy in the sun’s rays into electricity, the wind turbine was a welcome addition to the Center’s stewardship programs which aim to educate the public about sustainable living.

Wind is the fastest growing energy technology in the world, but it has only recently gained a foothold in the Midwest where the wind potential is far greater than in many parts of the U.S. Wind energy is renewable, and a clean technology that won’t harm the environment. The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful emissions causing breathing problems and asthma, and releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which cause acid rain. Fossil fuels also contribute to mercury contamination of our lakes and fish and are one of the primary contributors to the carbon dioxide that causes global warming. Wind energy hardly pollutes the environment at all and does not emit any pollution to air or water during use. Wind power is a renewable and sustainable energy source that will not compromise the environment for future generations.
