Cope Environmental Center named Non-Profit
of the Year!
The Richmond-Wayne County Chamber of Commerce each year selects businesses
and individuals to receive awards for outstanding services to the Wayne
County community. At the annual awards dinner on January 21st, held at
the Kuhlman Center, awards were given to these community leaders. Cope
Environmental Center (CEC) shared the prestigious Achievement of Excellence
- Non-Profit Award with the Wernle Children’s Home (www.wernle.org).
“It’s a tremendous honor”, says Lina Gordy, Cope Environmental
Center’s Executive Director, “receiving this award truly demonstrates
the support we have from our community”. As a local not-for-profit,
CEC relies on the generosity of the community. The positive publicity
brought on by the award is an enormous benefit to the organization. “We
are grateful to the Chamber for choosing Cope Center for this award”,
says Development Director Alison Zajdel. “We are also proud of Wernle’s
accomplishments and are pleased to share the award with them”, Alison
says.

CEC
gets endowment boost
Sally Reahard,
long
time donor to CEC and philanthropist, has left a bequest of $416,000.00
to CEC that will help start our Operational Endowment. The money will
be invested, and the interest will be used to help CEC pay operating expenses.
Sally was a good friend of the late Jim Cope. He and his wife Helen, and
their friend, the late Francis Parks, established Cope Environmental Center
in 1992. Reahard had made regular gifts to the center during her lifetime.
The legacy she has left us will allow the center to continue its efforts
to provide quality environmental education to the community.

"Hike
Yourself Healthy" Time!
Hike Yourself Healthy 2006 is just around
the corner! (Can you believe the time has come AGAIN?) The kick off for
this program will be at the Family Earth Day Celebration at Kuhlman Center
on April 29th and will last until early fall.
The CEC Staff has pledged to hike 500 miles on the CEC trails and challenges
YOU to double it. Don’t worry, you’ll have lots of help! Other
CEC members from around the world will be hiking as well all in support
of CEC Community and Youth Programs. This is a community collaboration,
so the more people that we can get involved, the closer we’ll get
to the community's goal of 1000 miles! Here’s how it works:
Step
1: Call us!
CEC will send you an information packet about Hike Yourself Healthy for
you to share with your group or family.
Step
2: Talk, talk, talk!
The more people we get involved, the better! So tell everyone what you’re
doing this summer to get healthy and support education.
Step 3: Gather pledges!
Ask friends, neighbors, and family members to sponsor your “Hike
Yourself Healthy” experience at CEC. They can pledge
per mile, per 1/4 mile, or per hike!
Step
4: Walk, walk, walk at CEC!
You can hike on your own schedule (although it’s always more fun
to hike with others!) and come back whenever you want. The CEC trails
are open from dawn to dusk every day. You’ll be asked to log your
hike so that we know how far we’ve been and how far we need to go!
So, how can
your group get involved??
Simple…get excited! You will be a part of a community-wide effort
to get healthy and support
education. Pledge forms will be distributed to each participant along
with special instructions to get you started.
At the end of
this program, CEC will host a Healthy Celebration to congratulate you
on your success. "Stay Active" Prizes will be given for most
miles hiked, largest group of hikers, and more! Don’t miss out on
this opportunity to have a great summer with CEC! The staff at CEC is
ready to answer questions about this experience and encourage you along,
so give us a call and get hiking!
So, why should
you Hike Yourself Healthy??
The proceeds
of “Hike Yourself Healthy” will fund youth
and community programs at Cope Environmental Center.
Participating in “Hike Yourself Healthy” helps everyone...including
you!
You and/or your
group can compete for GREAT "Stay Active" prizes including bikes,
health club memberships, backpacks, camping gear and more!
It’s
good for you- hiking relieves stress,
increases energy, and helps you
manage your weight!

Richmond
Power & Light named first recipient of the
CEC
Environmental Stewardship Award!
“RP&L is really encouraging
environmental stewardship with this commitment. We hope others follow
in their footsteps.” said Executive Director, Lina Gordy.
Centerville, Ind. - Cope Environmental
Center (CEC), a local non-profit environmental education center, likes
to reward good stewardship choices that make east-central Indiana a better
place to live. In a series of recognitions, the CEC Environmental Stewardship
Award will highlight businesses, organizations, public entities, groups
or individuals who proactively work for environmental sustainability.
First in line to receive the award is Richmond Power & Light (RP&L),
who recently became an Energy Star partner with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency. "Energy Star is a valuable and informative program.
RP&L is proud to be a representative of the program. Our web site
RP-L.com has valuable Energy Star information and a direct link to Energy
Star for more comprehensive energy efficiency ideas and strategies,"
said Dave Osborn of RP&L. As a partner in the Energy Star program,
RP&L has agreed to promote energy efficiency in both new and existing
homes, as well as products that are Energy Star labeled. Energy Star products
meet specific energy efficiency criteria, and thus curb energy consumption
and help lower electric bills. RP&L is one of only a few utility providers
in Indiana with an Energy Star partnership. "We would like to thank
Cope Environmental Center for this award. It is quite an honor to not
only receive the CEC Environmental Stewardship Award but to be the first
recipient is very special indeed," said Harry Phillips of RP&L
after receiving the award.
CEC will use this award to recognize
a regional business, organization, public entity, group, or individual
every other month. If you have suggestions for recipients that have demonstrated
outstanding environmental stewardship, you may submit suggestions to Lina
Gordy, at l.gordy@copeenvironmental.org.
